Today, at the Nvidia AI Summit 2024 held in Mumbai, a significant discussion took place between Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani. This conversation was centered around their joint efforts to revolutionize India’s AI infrastructure.
The event saw the announcement of a strategic partnership between Reliance and Nvidia to build large-scale AI infrastructure in India. This collaboration will harness Nvidia's advanced GB 200 supercomputer technology, marking a new chapter in India’s AI journey.
The goal is to create a massive AI ecosystem, starting with a 1 GW capacity at a single location, which could be expanded in the future. Ambani emphasized the ambition to democratize AI, similar to how Reliance’s Jio revolutionized mobile data in India by making it affordable to the masses.

During the fireside chat, Ambani highlighted how India is uniquely positioned for AI growth, with a large IT talent pool, abundant data, and a huge user base, all critical elements for AI development. Huang echoed this, citing India’s potential to lead globally in AI due to these factors. They also spoke about how open-source AI models, like Meta’s Llama, could be leveraged to build advanced Indian language models, pushing the boundaries of AI in local contexts.
This partnership aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of self-reliance in AI, emphasizing the need for India to produce AI solutions domestically instead of relying on foreign technologies. Huang recounted his previous conversation with the Prime Minister, who stressed the importance of adding value to India’s data rather than simply exporting it.
This collaboration is expected to accelerate India's AI capabilities, empowering industries and making AI accessible to the country's 1.4 billion people, following Jio’s model of affordable digital access.
