Bail Granted with Conditions
The Supreme Court has granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was facing charges related to a corruption case linked to an alleged liquor policy scam. The court criticized the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for unnecessarily prolonging his detention.
Conditions of Bail
Kejriwal was asked to submit a bond of Rs 10 lakh along with two sureties. The court also set a strict condition that Kejriwal must not make any public comments or participate in any official duties regarding the case while on bail.
Court Criticizes CBI
The Supreme Court, while delivering its judgment, expressed dissatisfaction with the CBI's actions. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan pointed out that keeping Kejriwal in detention for an extended period was unfair and amounted to a denial of his right to liberty.
Prolonged Detention Questioned
The court also noted that Kejriwal had been arrested shortly after being granted bail in a separate PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) case. The judges suggested this was done to keep him in custody, which they viewed as an abuse of the legal process.
