Prior to this, Trump had criticized both President Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for not speaking out against the attack on him. Trump supporter and tech billionaire Elon Musk even made controversial comments on social media, questioning why Biden and Harris weren't being targeted as well.
The incident occurred last Sunday afternoon when Trump was playing golf at his own club in Florida. An assailant, armed with an AK-47 rifle, was spotted hiding about 400 yards away from Trump. Thankfully, a security officer noticed the attacker in time.
Although the suspect managed to flee after opening fire, they were eventually apprehended. The FBI is now investigating the incident and confirmed that the attack was an attempt on Trump’s life, but it was thwarted thanks to vigilant security. Trump later stated that he heard the gunshots and assured everyone that he was completely safe.
He also told his supporters that he wouldn’t back down in the face of such events. This wasn’t the first attempt—back on July 13, during a rally, a bullet had grazed his right ear, tragically killing a bystander.
Despite his earlier criticisms, Trump had kind words for Kamala Harris following the attack. He revealed that Harris and President Biden both called him after the incident, expressing relief that he wasn’t harmed. Trump shared that Harris’ call was a positive conversation, saying it felt good to know she was glad he was safe. Trump made these remarks during a town hall meeting with Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
The White House also confirmed that both Harris and Biden had brief, cordial conversations with Trump. Harris reportedly told Trump she was happy to hear he was safe.
In a separate interview, Trump touched on international relations, stating that he doesn’t see China and Russia as enemies. He expressed optimism about maintaining good relations with both nations, and also mentioned his hope for peace between Russia and Ukraine.
