Importance of Bhadra on Raksha Bandhan
In 2024, Raksha Bandhan is falling under the shadow of Bhadra, an inauspicious period during which tying a Rakhi is not considered favorable. According to tradition, Rakhi should always be tied after the Bhadra period has ended to ensure good fortune and well-being.
Significance of Tying Three Knots
When tying a Rakhi, it is important to tie three knots, each carrying deep significance. The first knot is for the long life of the brother, the second for the long life of the sister, and the third knot symbolizes the enduring relationship between the siblings. These knots are believed to be associated with the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh.
Today's Rakhi is especially significant because it coincides with the last Monday of the Sawan month. On this occasion, it is recommended to first worship Lord Shiva. During the worship, perform the Abhishek (ritual bathing) of the Shivling with Gangajal (Ganges water) and milk. Then, offer Belpatra (Bael leaves), Dhatura, and Gangajal to the Shivling. After this, present sweets and fruits, followed by performing the aarti of Lord Shiva.
The auspicious time for tying Rakhi is from 1:32 PM to 9:07 PM. According to this timing, tie the Rakhi on your brother’s wrist.
Rakhi should always be tied on the brother’s wrist following the correct ritual. To do this, first prepare a plate (thali) with roli (sacred red powder), rice, sweets, and the Rakhi. Then, apply a tilak (sacred mark) on your brother's forehead. After this, tie the Rakhi on his right hand and offer him sweets. In the evening, perform worship of Lord Shiva. By following these rituals, you invite happiness and prosperity into your life.
Correct Finger for Applying Tilak
The selection of the finger used to apply tilak on the brother's forehead is also significant. If the sister is younger, she should use her ring finger, traditionally known as Anamika, for applying the tilak. If the sister is older, she should use her thumb.
Celebrating Raksha Bandhan without a Sibling
For those who do not have a brother or sister, the festival can still be observed meaningfully. Brothers without sisters can visit a temple and have a priest tie a Rakhi for them. Similarly, sisters without brothers can offer Rakhi to their chosen deity, such as Lord Krishna.
Auspicious Timings and Rituals
The most auspicious time to tie Rakhi today is between 1:32 PM and 9:07 PM. Alongside tying the Rakhi, today is also significant as the last Monday of the holy month of Sawan. Devotees are encouraged to perform special prayers to Lord Shiva, including offering Gangajal and Bilva leaves.
By following these traditions and rituals, Raksha Bandhan can be a day filled with love, blessings, and the strengthening of familial bonds.
