Porsche has announced a recall for the Taycan electric vehicle due to potential issues with the front brake hoses, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the USA. This recall affects almost every Taycan manufactured at the Zuffenhausen plant in Germany since 2019. Here's a detailed look at the situation:
Recall Details
The NHTSA report highlights that some Taycan units might develop cracks in the front brake hoses, leading to brake fluid leakage. This could impair the front brakes' functionality and increase the risk of a crash. Porsche USA's information to the NHTSA explains that certain driving conditions can put stress on the brake hoses at their point of minimum bending radius, damaging the inner fabric layer over time.
To address this issue, Porsche will replace the defective brake hoses with new ones that have an increased radius. Although the recall covers 31,689 Taycan units made since the car's launch, the actual number of defective units is likely much lower.
The NHTSA report mainly focuses on Taycans sold in the USA, with only seven complaints received about the faulty parts since June 2023. It also references a non-US incident where a Taycan involved in a fatal crash was reportedly speeding. This incident is believed to be the recent fatal crash involving a Taycan in Pune, India.
Potential Impact on Other EVs
Porsche is expected to issue a global recall announcement soon. Given that the Audi e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT share mechanical similarities with the Taycan, there's speculation that these models might also face a recall for the same brake hose issue.
This recall aims to ensure the safety and reliability of Porsche's flagship electric vehicle, addressing the potential defect before it leads to serious consequences.
