Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met businessman Ratan Tata in Mumbai to express gratitude for Tata's forthcoming ₹27,000 crore semiconductor plant in the state.
"The Tata semiconductor facility in Jagiroad, Morigaon, will place us on the global semiconductor map and revitalize East India's economy," said Sarma after his meeting with Tata and Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran. "On behalf of the people of Assam, I extend heartfelt thanks to Mr. Ratan Tata and Mr. N.
Chandrasekaran for their confidence in our state to undertake this transformative investment," Sarma added, hopeful for the plant's first chips by 2025. Sharma also highlighted the Skill Development Centre's role in empowering Northeastern youth with courses in AI, semiconductors, and electronics to secure jobs at the Jagiroad unit.
"Already, 1,500 youths from Assam, primarily women, are undergoing training at Tata facilities in Bangalore and nearby areas," he noted, envisioning their leadership roles once the semiconductor facility commences operations in 2025. Last week,
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Morigaon, set up by Tata Electronics Private Limited under the Modified Scheme for Semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP).
